Side Hustle Spotlight Week 2 – SEO

This week’s side hustle spotlight is on SEO – Search Engine Optimisation.  SEO is an extremely profitable side hustle and potential primary income driver if you become very successful at it – both through consulting for others and driving any other side hustle you may be doing.

So what is SEO and why should you care?

SEO, as defined by wikipedia, is “the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a web search engine’s unpaid results—often referred to as ‘natural’, ‘organic’, or ‘earned’ results.”

In other words, SEO is the process of getting a website listed on the front page of a search engine (google, bing, etc) without including advertising efforts.

As found here, the first result in a google search receives 33% of the traffic, and it scales down exponentially from there.  Once you reach page 2 (result 11 to 20), you can see that each page is only receiving about 1% of traffic.

This clearly leads into why SEO is so valued.

If you are running any sort of website which wants or requires traffic, SEO becomes a huge deal.  Any business that is trying to make money online will likely be interested in spending good money to rank higher.  By becoming experienced in SEO, you can sell your time consulting for clients on SEO and doing website SEO.

Another valuable thing to consider with this skill is to build your own website and get it to successfully rank well in google in order to make yourself money.  This idea is more ideal in my opinion than the previous idea, as this does not leverage your time for money, rather it improves your business, leveraging your money for money.

Either way, SEO can prove to be a very valuable skill, and is definitely a viable path for extra (or primary) income if you are willing to put the time in to learning the skill.
